We have seen Solar energy self-consumption rise from around 30-40% to around 70-80% by installing storage. This will further reduce energy bills and as a result, your payback period for the Solar PV system will also reduce.
Battery storage is particularly useful and most valuable economically if you have Solar, but are out of the home most of the day, where solar generation is at its highest, by storing the energy for use for when you return home.
There are many ways of increasing your self-consumption percentage just by thinking ‘smart’. Utilise the sun, by using your appliances such as your washing machine and dishwasher during the daytime whilst the sun is out.
Another way of utilising solar generation is to install a solar energy diverter, to heat up your immersion tank for free hot water.
With a Solar PV & Battery storage system installed, you have the ability to sell your energy stored in your battery back to the grid.
The most beneficial way of using your Solar pv & Battery storage system is to self-consume the energy you create, but if you happen to have excess energy stored in your battery, why not sell it back to the grid during times of high demand, you will find that energy companies are offering a very good export rate during the hours of 4pm-7pm for example.
By utilising new tariffs such as Octopus Agile for example, you will be able to use your battery storage system to import electricity during times of low demand and export in times of high demand.
Remember, you don’t need a Solar PV system to utilise the import/export abilities of a Battery storage system.
Battery storage allows you to make the most of electricity that you generate by storing it, so that you can use the energy when you actually need it.
For example, you could store more of the solar power that you generate so you can use it when the sun has gone down, instead of drawing on grid electricity from your energy supplier.
Battery storage also enables you to have the ability to keep the power on when you have a power loss to the building. Storage systems can be set-up to act as an emergency power supply, where we can back up the whole home or ‘essential’ loads such as safety circuits (intruder alarm, CCTV, smoke alarms), lighting, heating and low load socket circuits.

How many batteries would I need?
The number of batteries needed is dependent on your specific load profile. Bigger is not always better!
We carry out site specific load profiling, which will give us an idea of your peak usage including how much energy you’re using and at what times. We do this by typically looking at your last 3 months electricity bills.
More often than not, we recommend that you install a smaller battery system initially, and then if you find that you could do with extra storage, we can expand the system at a later stage.
All our battery storage systems are modular, so you can add additional batteries with minimal fuss.
Are there any grants available?
Unfortunately, there isn’t any grants available for Battery storage alone, but the UK government announced they have reduced the VAT threshold for standalone Battery storage systems down to the same level as Solar PV which is 0% VAT.
Do I need Solar Panels to install Battery storage?
No you don’t need Solar Panels to enjoy the benefits from having a Battery storage system, especially when there are now agile energy tariffs from companies like Octopus energy, you can charge up on cheaper electricity overnight at off peak periods and then sell back to the grid for a profit during high demand periods.
